North Wales X/Country League R1
HOLLY ROBERTS of Colwyn Bay Athletic Club enjoyed the perfect start to the North Wales Junior Cross-Country League, winning her opening race in Bangor.
Roberts won the under-15 girls race at Treborth Track in Bangor on Saturday - a week after finishing an excellent fifth in her age group in the first round of tough North Staffordshire Cross-Country League in Winsford.
She was not the only Bay youngster to claim a podium place in Bangor, with
Chloe Jones taking third in the U13 girls race, and
Iolo James finishing in the same position in the U15 boys.
Bethan Davies was one place behind Jones in the U13 girls, while
Tomos Land was also fourth in the U13 boys.
Following the opening round of the junior league in the morning, in the afternoon it was the turn of the seniors at the same venue in the first fixture of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross-Country League.
The Bays
Abi Backshall finished second in the under-20 standings, placing 19th overall in a strong senior womens race in the first of five fixtures over the winter.
She was backed up a good turnout from her club-mates, with
Helen MacArthur finishing 25th, and two under-17 athletes making their debut in the senior race,
Gwenno Morris 34th and
Siriol Jones in 59th
Between the two teenagers for the Bay was
Vicky Ronald in 46th
The Bays women are the reigning Division One team champions, but were missing a couple of their best runners and finished fourth on the day, behind Eryri Harriers, Oswestry Olympians and Wrexham.
The clubs men also enjoyed a good turnout and made a solid start to their campaign in Division Two, finishing second behind Buckley.
They were led home by
Steve Eardley in 38th place, with
Richard Watson making a welcome return to the league two places behind him, and
Russell Godwin a further eight places back in 48th.
Colwyn Bay host the next round of both the junior and senior North Wales leagues at St Davids College in Llandudno on Saturday, October 18. The next round in the North Staffordshire League is at Stafford Common a week after that.
