Join the Junior Welsh Fell Running Community!
Fell running, also known as mountain running, is an exhilarating form of running that takes place on challenging, open, and often remote terrain like mountains and rough hillsides. It involves steep ascents, fast descents, and navigating uneven ground—a great way to test your fitness and enjoy the outdoors!
What is the Welsh Fell Runners Association (WFRA)?
The WFRA is an independent organisation that supports fell runners in Wales. For juniors, they are the key body that organises and promotes junior races and championship series across North and South Wales.

Junior Races and Series
The WFRA runs specific series for juniors, typically divided into North and South Wales, plus an All-Wales Championship.
-
Age Categories: Races typically use categories based on the runner's age on December 31st of the racing year. Categories usually include U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, U17, and U20.
-
Race Terrain: Junior courses are generally well-marked, especially for younger age groups. Older categories (U15, U17, U20) may need to be prepared for courses that require some navigation (GPS is not permitted in races).
-
Kit Requirements: Safety is paramount. Older juniors (U15, U17, U20) should be prepared to carry full kit in races as per WFRA rules (e.g., waterproof coat and trousers, hat, gloves, whistle, map & compass). Younger groups may only need a waterproof coat, hat, and gloves depending on the weather conditions.
How to Join
Junior membership is typically processed online via the WFRA's official platform (through a third-party Fabian4 https://www.fabian4.co.uk/default.aspx?EventID=4084).
-
Parental Consent: As with all junior running, a parent or legal guardian will need to complete the entry and consent process.
Important Kit Requirements for Junior Runners
For safety in fell racing, it's crucial to be prepared for all weather conditions. The WFRA stipulates mandatory kit, and a parent or legal guardian must consent to all junior race entries.
-
U20s, U17s, and U15s should be prepared to carry full kit in all races, as per WFRA rules.
-
Other age groups may still be required to carry or wear a waterproof coat, hat, and gloves.
The Full Kit generally includes:
-
Waterproof coat and trousers (with taped seams).
-
Hat.
-
Gloves.
-
Map & compass (non-electronic devices like GPS watches are not permitted for navigation).
-
Whistle.
The specific kit requirements may be relaxed by the Race Organiser on the day depending on the weather, but you should always bring it. You can find more details on the WFRA's junior information page: WFRA Junior Information
