Weekend 4th & 5th July Round Up

Saturday 4th July saw the 77th edition of the Welsh Schools National Track & Field Championships take place at the Ron Jones Stadium, Aberdare.

Over 400 pupils competed for their School Districts. There were 8 School Districts competing; Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan, Dyfed, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales.

For Colwyn Bay Athletic Club it was a tale of two halves with our athletes representing two school districts Eryri and North East Wales.

For Eryri we had:

Cari Roberts - Cari ran the 100 and 200m Senior Girls, medalling twice and coming away with two bronzes, Da Iawn Cari!

Julia Lament - Julia ran the 300m Middle Girls, pulling out an amazing time of 42.92! Well done Julia!

Sienna Hughes - ran the 100m Junior Girls coming in 2nd with a time of 13.29 and jumping in the Junior Girls Long Jump with a distance of 4.24 to claim joint 4th position. Excellent performances Sienna

(Sienna will also be heading back down to Aberdare on Wednesday to represent her school in the Cup and Plate Welsh finals - Good luck Ysgol Aberconwy!)

For North East Wales district we had:

Elin Evans - Running the 800m Middle Girls. Elin battled through the pack to gain a 5th place. Well done Elin

Ruben Crierie - Running the 1500m Steeplechase for the Senior Boys coming in 2nd place.

This event is used to help select athletes for the Welsh Schools team. The team will be heading to the Schools International Championships at Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday 18th July.

If your secondary aged child fancies a chance of getting to the schools final next year then make sure their PE teacher keeps an eye out for the qualifying rounds so they get the opportunity to compete (same applies for the schools cross country coming up over the winter). These are separate competitions to club events and so you will need to speak to the PE staff directly to get them on the case
